The International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma): What is it?

16 to 19-year-olds are the target audience for the two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma program. The main goals are to help children develop into well-rounded, autonomous, and critical thinkers.

The IB Diploma program seeks to educate students for a wider range of situations by covering subjects that are both relevant to today's world and vital to life. It's a completely different learning programme, not just an A-level substitute.

Students choose one topic from each of the six subject groups—languages and literature, sciences, people and cultures, mathematics, language learning, and the arts—during the course. Three of these are then studied more in-depth by the students. In other words, you study six subjects in total, three of which are at a higher level.

The curriculum requires completion of an additional course called "The Theory of Knowledge." To complete this, you must write a lengthy essay and take part in the non-examined "creativity, action, service" module, which centers on community service, sport, and creativity.

How Do A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate Vary From Each Other?

Students pursuing A-levels usually study 3 to 4 topics and gain extensive knowledge in each of these areas. Six subjects are covered in the IB Education, each from a distinct field of study.

Therefore, whilst A-level students can choose similar courses, IB Diploma students are not allowed to study six themes that are all connected to media.

According to the conclusions of The University Admissions Officers Report 2017, this is the reason why the IB Diploma is occasionally perceived as providing students with a stronger "global outlook."

In addition, students pursuing the IB Diploma are expected to become self-organized and independent thinkers, and they undertake a great deal more independent learning than their A-level peers.

Conversely, some believe that A-levels are more in-depth and provide pupils with greater knowledge of the subjects they study. Each subject is examined in greater detail because there are fewer subjects.

What topics are covered?

The curriculum is composed of six topic groups and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP) core.

The Diploma program, which consists of the three necessary modules, aims to create well-rounded, globally prepared individuals with the help of an IB tutor in India from IBGA. The units consist of:

Students who study theory of knowledge consider the essence of knowledge and how we come to know the things we do.

The extended essay is a standalone, self-directed study project that culminates in a 4,000-word document.

Students execute a project pertaining to those three concepts: creativity, activity, and service.

In addition, each of the six study areas that follow has one subject chosen by the students. In total, six topics—one for each choice—are presented. Of the six subjects selected, three need to be studied at an advanced level, while the other three will be learned at an intermediate level:

  • Studies in language and literature
  • Language acquisition
  • Individuals and societies
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • The arts

Reporting and scoring


Following the marking and weighting of all assessment components, students are given a final score for each course that ranges from 1 (lowest) - 7 (highest). Courses in HL & SL have the same weight.

The combined results of the extended essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) for the core may qualify for up to three extra points.

Both are graded on an A (highest) to E (lowest) scale. Although CAS is not graded, completion is necessary to receive the diploma.

According to IB Teachers the degree to which students grasp both fundamental and higher competencies, such as:

Topic and concept knowledge and comprehension


Research and autonomous learning abilities, critical thinking, reflective skills, information

Analysis and evaluation, creative problem solving, argument formulation and presentation, intercultural comprehension, and an international perspective.

Students who complete the core requirements, achieve at least twenty-four points overall, and receive a minimum mark of Three in a minimum of 4 topics will be granted the diploma. Every student receives recognition for each completely completed individual component.

The degree to which students grasp both fundamental and advanced skills, such as:

  • Topic and concept knowledge and comprehension
  • The ability to think critically, reflect, conduct independent study, and learn
  • Information analysis and evaluation, original problem-solving, and argument development and delivery
  • An international perspective, as well as intercultural competence and understanding.

Students who complete the core requirements, achieve not less than 24 points overall, and receive a minimum grade of Three in at least four topics will be granted the diploma. Every student receives recognition for each completely completed individual component.
